Keeping cool in volcano country
I read with interest “Capitals of Cool” [Aug. 5], describing places to beat the summer’s heat, but you missed my favorite place to cool off during the summer and maybe light a fire during the night. Volcano, at 3,500 feet on the Big Island of Hawaii, is cool during the day (70s and cooler). No air-conditioning is needed there. And temperatures in the upper 80s and warm Pacific waters are only a 40-minute drive away.

This hotel is in her doghouse
Regarding “A Local Mountain Getaway, Elevated,” Hotel Review, July 22: In February, my sister and I took our families to Lake Arrowhead Resort. We have stayed at the resort through its many renovations, and it is by far the most dramatic and comfortable -- except for the dogs.
There were dogs everywhere, barking for extended periods in nearby rooms, dogs in the lobby. I felt like I was in a kennel.

Glacier visit on the to-do list
I read “Warming to Glacier” [July 29] aloud to my husband. We travel a lot, and we’ve had Glacier National Park in the back of our minds as a place to go someday. Now we are ready to pull Glacier from the someday list and go there next summer.
