Finding a lei making class in Hawaii
THE LEIS OF THE LAND
The art of lei making is demonstrated at a variety of locations - from resorts to shopping centers - throughout Hawaii.
On Oahu, classes are offered 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Waikiki Community Center, 310 Paoakalani Ave., Honolulu; (808) 923-1802, www.waikikicommunitycenter.org; $3 plus the cost of supplies.
On the Big Island, lei-making classes will be held on June 28 and 29 at Honaunau National Historic Park; www.nps.gov/puho; no admission fee. Occasional demonstrations are also held at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park; www.nps.gov/havo; admission fee.
The Kaanapali Beach Hotel, 2525 Kaanapali Parkway, Lahaina, Maui, (800) 262-8450, www.kbhmaui.com, offers many classes, including lei-making. Classes are free for hotel guests; others may attend for a fee.
Paradise Flower Farms, (808) 878-2591, www.paradiseflowers.com, sends ready-made leis and flower blooms overnight to the U.S. mainland for those who wish to create leis.
