THE BEST WAY TO HANA, HAWAII
From LAX, United, American and Delta offer nonstop service to Maui, and United, Hawaiian and Alaska offer connecting service (change of plane). Restricted round-trip fares begin at $852. From Maui’s Kahului Airport, take Highway 36E to Highway 360 to Hana, about 50 scenic miles, most of it winding, two-lane road. Don’t attempt it at night.
WHERE TO STAY
Travaasa Hana, 5031 Hana Highway, Hana; (855) 868-7282, (808) 248-8211, https://www.travaasa.com/hana. Luxury resort hotel on 70 tropical acres. Pools, tennis courts, spa, lounge with entertainment, upscale dining room. Doubles start at $400 a night.
Hana Kai Maui, 4865 Uakea Road, Hana; (800) 346-2772, https://www.hanakai.com. Accommodations in low-rise buildings overlooking a black sand beach. No pool or air conditioning. Rates start at $195 a night, double occupancy.
WHERE TO EAT
Hana Ranch Restaurant, 5031 Hana Highway, Hana; (808) 270-5280 (no website). It’s crowded because most bus tours stop here, not because the food is special.
Thai Food by Pranee, 5050 Uakea Road, Hana. (No phone or website). Tiny, open-air restaurant featuring a Thai special of the day. Flavorful, authentic. Open weekends. Entrees $10.
