Keukenhof gardens near Amsterdam colorfully mark Van Gogh anniversary

Keukenhof gardens in Lisse, 20 miles southeast of Amsterdam and open only in the spring, is also joining the Van Gogh anniversary celebration.

This year the park’s theme is the Dutch artist, whose self-portrait is depicted by a mosaic of flowering tulips and grape hyacinths. Besides the Van Gogh self-portrait, the deep burgundy Vincent van Gogh tulip, developed in 2011, is blooming this spring at Keukenhof.

There is also a mobile artist’s workshop — a platform on wheels that is equipped with brushes, paints and other tools Van Gogh might have used — that is moved to wherever magnolia and cherry trees, which he painted, are blooming; visitors can have their pictures taken with the display. Another area has been created for visitors to take Van Gogh-inspired selfies, and there are also indoor shows of flower arrangements that change weekly and are based on his paintings of sunflowers, almond blossoms and other subjects.
