Is Meow Wolf an art complex? Maybe, but it’s more like an immersive Twilight Zone in Santa Fe

Santa Fe is called “The City Different,†and its newest attraction certainly attests to that. In fact, “different†doesn’t begin to describe the place for which “Game of Thrones†writer George R.R. Martin is the primary investor.

The name Meow Wolf alludes to the unique nature of what a visitor brochure describes as an “art complex.†Adjectives such as “bizarre†and “peculiar†also fit the unique gallery — if that’s even the right word — which is in a former bowling alley four miles southwest of downtown Santa Fe.

Visitors enter through the normal-looking facade of the House of Eternal Return. But once inside, they quickly discover nothing is as it appears. Crawl into the fireplace and you wind up in a different space.

The same goes for guests who open the refrigerator door and discover a bright white passageway leading to myriad interactive and otherworldly experiences.

Welcome to a modern-day Twilight Zone inside a Victorian home whose occupants have fled for some unknown reason, although convoluted clues abound. For starters, take a peek at what’s written in the diary or typed onto the computer screen in the second-floor office.

Meow Wolf, which opened in March, is the creation of 150 young artists who created 70 immersive spaces that appear helter-skelter inside the house. Novelist Martin put up half of the money needed to get the exhibition open.

“He put $3 million into the project,†said Vince Kadlubek, founder and chief executive. “That consisted of the purchasing of the building, the renovating of the building and the parking lot. Then we became the tenant. George R.R. Martin is our landlord.â€

Info: Meow Wolf is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays through Mondays. Tickets cost $18 for adults and $12 for children 12 and younger.
