So long, Danish froufrou, hello Scandinavian chic as Solvang’s Petersen transforms into the Landsby

The Landsby, the newly renovated boutique hotel in Solvang, has transformed the former Petersen by channeling the California town’s Danish roots in a hip way.

The one-time Petersen Village Inn now has 41 rooms that embrace contemporary Scandinavian design rather than the old-world cuteness for which the city is known.

The building that houses the Landsby -- its name means “the village” in Danish -- isn’t new; the Petersen was built in the 1980s. It still has the half-timbered architecture that’s so Solvang, but it has been whitewashed for a more modern look.

Rooms vary from a classic queen with a single bed to the Tower Suite King, which really is in a tower. That two-story suite with a sitting room has a fireplace and wet bar, plus a jetted tub in the bathroom.

If you visit June 17 to 19, for instance, expect to pay $519 a night for this room, according to the hotel’s website.

The renovation brings a new dining option. Mad & Vin (Food & Wine, in Danish) is billed as a restaurant that reworks some classic Danish dishes but adds fresh California options.

The hotel calls it “wine-country cuisine flavors,” and indeed it’s close to Santa Barbara Wine Country.

The hotel offers opening rates starting at $189 plus tax through June 30. All stays come with breakfast, free wi-fi and free parking.
