Bo Ryan to retire from being Wisconsin coach after one more season
Bo Ryan thought he was ready to step down as Wisconsin’s coach right after the Badgers lost to Duke in the NCAA title game in April.
After talking to athletic director Barry Alvarez, Ryan decided to put off that decision. Now, three months later, the longtime coach has made up his mind -- next season, his 14th with the Badgers, will be his last with the team.
“I’ve always been told that is not a decision to be made right after a season is completed,” Ryan said in a statement issued by the school. “Barry thankfully encouraged me to take some time to think about it and I have done that.”
Ryan, 67, has turned Wisconsin into a national power. He has led the Badgers to a 357-125 record and into the NCAA tournament every year. His team won four Big Ten titles and has made the Final Four in each of the past two years.
“I am looking forward to another year with our program, including our players, my terrific assistant coaches, our office staff and everyone who supports Wisconsin basketball here in Madison, around the state and across the country,” Ryan said.
Ryan added that he hopes assistant coach Greg Gard becomes his successor.
