UCLA pitchers come through again in 1-0 victory over Oregon

UCLA baseball Coach John Savage is known for his ability to develop top pitchers, and his staff is having quite a Pac-12 Conference series in Eugene, Ore., this weekend.

For the second consecutive game Saturday night, the Bruins defeated Oregon, 1-0. That’s 18 consecutive scoreless innings against the Ducks and, once again, it was closer David Berg coming through.

Berg picked up his 10th save by pitching 1 1/3 innings. He also threw two scoreless innings on Friday night for his ninth save.

Before Saturday night, the earned-run average for UCLA pitchers was 2.54. Starter Nick Vander Tuig (6-3) went seven innings Saturday. Zack Weiss got two outs in the eighth before Berg came in. UCLA is 9-0 in one-run games this season. The three pitchers held Oregon to three hits. It was Savage’s 300th coaching victory at UCLA.

The only run scored on Saturday was an unearned run in the first inning. Freshman left-hander Cole Irvin, an Anaheim Servite High graduate, threw a complete game for Oregon, giving up six hits.

UCLA (25-10, 9-5) is battling for the Pac-12 lead with Oregon State (29-8, 10-4) and Oregon (28-10, 12-5).
