Shane Victorino in, Mike Trout out of Angels lineup against Astros
Reporting from Houston — Shane Victorino, acquired from the Boston Red Sox for infielder Josh Rutledge on Monday, will start in left field and bat eighth for the Angels against the Houston Astros in Minute Maid Park on Tuesday night, but center fielder Mike Trout is not in the lineup.
Trout, who missed his first game of the season because of a sore left heel on July 21, jammed his left wrist while attempting a diving catch of Elvis Andrus’ flare to shallow center in the fourth inning of Sunday’s 13-7 win over the Texas Rangers.
Trout remained in the game, lining a single to left in the fifth, crushing a grand slam to right field in the sixth and singling to center in the eighth. But the wrist is apparently too sore for Trout to play the opener of a big series against the Astros, who are a game behind the first-place Angels in the American League West.
Trout is undergoing an MRI test on his left wrist today.
Trout, the 2014 AL most valuable player, is batting .315 with a major league-leading 31 home runs, 64 runs batted in, 75 runs, a .405 on-base percentage and a .632 slugging percentage.
The Angels also recalled left-handed-hitting outfielder/first baseman Efren Navarro from triple-A Salt Lake and placed left fielder Matt Joyce, who was injured in a collision with shortstop Erick Aybar on Sunday, on the seven-day concussion list.
Daniel Robertson will start in center field for the Angels on Tuesday night, and right fielder Kole Calhoun was dropped from second to third in the order. In another move, third baseman Kyle Kubitza was sent back to Salt Lake to clear another roster spot.
