Greatest three-point contest ever at All-Star weekend? Very likely

Reporting from New York — The phrase “greatest ever” gets tossed around without much heed in the sports world.

However, it might actually apply to this year’s three-point-shooting contest during the NBA’s All-Star weekend.

“I think it’s the greatest field that we’ve seen,” LeBron James said Friday without any trace of hyperbole.

League officials did well in picking the contestants for Saturday’s contest, mainly by securing Golden State’s backcourt duo of Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry.

Then they got Kyle Korver, currently tied for the league lead with 161 threes and impressively atop the NBA in accuracy with staggering 52.3% success behind the arc.

Throw in James Harden, and sure, Kyrie Irving, J.J. Redick and also Wesley Matthews, who is tied with Korver and Curry for most three-pointers made.

Marco Belinelli won the event a year ago, and he’ll be there too Saturday. No offense to him, but good luck this year.

Only one thing could top it: Ray Allen coming out of retirement to add his outside shot to the mix.

“This right here is going to be the best one we’ve ever seen,” TNT analyst Shaquille O’Neal predicted Thursday. “We’ve seen [great shooters] like Craig Hodges and Larry Bird ... but this is going to be the best ever.”
