Jeff Gordon hasn’t yet made racing plans after this NASCAR season

Jeff Gordon said Friday he doesn’t yet know whether he’ll drive in selected races after this year, his last full season in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series.

“I have not even attempted to go down that path yet,” Gordon, a four-time Cup champion, told reporters at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, site of the next Cup race Sunday.

Gordon, 43, announced before the season opened that this would be his final year driving the No. 24 Chevrolet full time for Hendrick Motorsports.

He did leave the door open to driving in selected events, perhaps even in other motor-racing series, starting in 2016.

Gordon is off to a slow start this year and he’s 25th in the Cup title standings. But his car has been fast and winning a race during the 26-race regular season likely would put him back in NASCAR’s Chase for the Cup title playoff in the fall.

“I want to leave this season competitive and up front and winning races and in the Chase with a chance at the championship,” Gordon said. “So we’ve got a little work to do here first before I can start thinking about anything else,” he said.

Gordon is a three-time winner at Auto Club Speedway. He won the first Cup race held at the two-mile Fontana track, in 1997, then won again in 1999 and 2004.
