Michael Sam’s next career move could be with Montreal Alouettes
Michael Sam’s chances of playing in the NFL are slim, but his career prospects north of the border seem healthy.
The Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League told the Montreal Gazette they believe they have a chance at signing Sam.
“The CFL is cut out perfectly for his style,†Alouettes General Manager Jim Popp said Tuesday. “It would give him the opportunity to do what he does best.
“The indications were he was ready to come last fall, and he’s still not with us,†Popp continued. “So I really don’t know. Seriously, I’d say our chances are 50/50.â€
Sam, the first openly gay player to be drafted by an NFL team, recently took part in the NFL Veteran Combine, but he didn’t receive any offers from teams.
A former Southeastern Conference co-defensive player of the year at Missouri, Sam was cut by the Rams during 2014 the preseason after he was drafted last April in the seventh round. He later joined the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad before being released in October.
Sam is a contestant on the ABC reality television program “Dancing With the Stars.â€
“His agent knows. They’re ready,†Popp said. “They know this may be what it is. It’s Michael who has to make the decision.â€
