Marlins name GM Dan Jennings as new manager

The Miami Marlins have decided on their new manager.

Emphasis on the word new.

Dan Jennings, who serves as the team’s general manager, is expected to be named Monday as the successor to the recently fired Mike Redmond.

CBS Sports was the first to report the news about Jennings, who is the Marlins’ sixth manager since June 2010.

To say Jennings is a bit inexperienced in managing a baseball team would be a great understatement. The only other time he served in such a position was a coach at a high school in Mobile, Ala., back in the 1980s.

In addition, Jennings never played professional baseball. The closest he got, according to USA Today, was participating in spring training with a New York Yankees Class A affiliate back in 1984.

But Jennings is well-respected within Major League Baseball, serving as a scout and executive for the Tampa Bay Rays before moving to the Marlins’ front office in 2002. He took over as GM before last season.

The Marlins are 16-22 and haven’t had a winning record since 2009.
