The morning after: Notes from the Kings’ Game 1 loss

ST. LOUIS — Good morning from Scottrade Center, where the Kings are scheduled to be on the ice for practice at 11 a.m. Central time. The Blues are holding an optional practice at noon in their suburban practice rink. Since I haven’t perfected the art of being in two places at once, I’ll report from the Kings’ session.

First, a few follow-up notes from the Kings’ 2-1 overtime loss to St. Louis in Game 1 on Tuesday: Kings defenseman Robyn Regehr apparently suffered a broken nose when he was hit in the face by the skate boot of Blues forward David Backes.

Regehr bled so profusely that observers initially thought he had been cut by a skate blade, but he said afterward that it was the heel of the boot. In true hockey player tradition, he missed only a few minutes and was right back out there.

Alexander Steen’s overtime goal, scored soon after the Kings had begun a four-minute power play, was the first shorthanded overtime goal in the playoffs since Edmonton’s Fernando Pisani scored the winner in a 4-3 victory over Carolina in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final. That information is courtesy of the NHL.

Also, the NHL officially announced that the Chicago Blackhawks will face the Pittsburgh Penguins at Soldier Field next March 1 as part of the six-game Stadium Classic outdoor series. The league has not yet announced that the Kings will face the Ducks next Jan. 25 at Dodger Stadium, but that announcement is coming soon.

More later, after the Kings practice.
