New York Knicks point guard Jason Kidd will fight a charge that he was under the influence of alcohol when he crashed his vehicle into a telephone pole over the summer.

“He is taking this very, very seriously,†attorney Edward Burke Jr. said after Kidd appeared in court at a preliminary hearing on Wednesday. “He wants to get this past him as quickly as possible. The legal process takes some time but he is ready for his season.â€

Kidd was arrested about a week after signing with the Knicks when his vehicle hit a pole in Water Mill, N.Y. The misdemeanor charge carries the potential for up to a year in jail.
