Four people die in fire at home of former tennis star James Blake

James Blake is a retired U.S. tennis player who was once ranked as high as No. 4 in the world.

At the moment, however, he is making headlines as the owner of the $1.5-million Tampa, Fla., mansion that burned down Wednesday. The bodies of two adults and two teenagers were found in the rubble.

Blake’s agent, Carlos Fleming, told the Associated Press that Blake was not in Florida at the time of the fire. He had no further comment.

Blake had been renting the house to a family with the last name of Campbell, according to Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Col. Donna Lusczynski. Voter registration records show that husband and wife Darrin and Kimberly Campbell live there. Their two teenage children, Colin and Megan, attend the Carrollwood Day private school.

The identities of the fire victims won’t be known until preliminary autopsies have been completed, but the Campbells could not be located Wednesday, officials said.

Authorities said the fire was intentionally set, and Lusczynski said that murder-suicide is a possibility. She described the fire as unusual, noting that there were “various fireworks” throughout the home.

The 34-year-old Blake, who was No. 4 on the ATP world tour in 2006, retired last year. He started the James Blake Foundation in 2008 in memory of his father, Thomas Blake, who died of gastric cancer in 2004. According to its website, the foundation has raised more than $1 million for the fight against cancer.
