St. Louis Cardinals left fielder Stephen Piscotty was carted off the field Monday in Pittsburgh after hitting his head on center fielder Peter Bourjos’ knee while the two chased a fly ball.
The two outfielders drifted toward each other while spotting a Josh Harrison blooper to left-center field in the seventh inning. As they got closer, Piscotty appeared to lose his footing and collided with Bourjos.
Bourjos made the catch and summoned trainers. Piscotty did not move immediately after the contact and appeared unconscious.
Piscotty was attended to and taken off the field on a stretcher, and waved to the crowd as he left.
“I had 100 scenarios running through my head and none of them were good,” Cardinals third baseman Matt Carpenter told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “Instantly, I was planning for all the worst possible scenarios for what could be going on. It’s just a horrible, horrible moment. Just a scary thing.”
The Cardinals later announced Piscotty had suffered a head contusion and was taken to a local hospital for examination. Initial test results were negative for any substantial damage, but Piscotty was held overnight.
In 62 games, Piscotty, a 24-year-old rookie, is hitting .310 with seven home runs and 39 runs batted in.
He was replaced in left field by Jon Jay.
The Cardinals went on to defeat the Pirates, 3-0.
