Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon McCarthy, who suffered a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain after he was hit in the head by a line drive while pitching for Oakland against the Angels last season, had a seizure last week that doctors say is related to the original injury.

McCarthy said he was having dinner at a restaurant with his wife, Amanda, last Monday when the seizure began, and that she called 911 and paramedics rushed him to the hospital.

“I remember someone restraining me and telling me I had a seizure,†McCarthy told the Arizona Republic’s Nick Piecoro. “I don’t really remember much past that until I was at the hospital.â€

Doctors have put McCarthy on anti-seizure medication, and he said he was told he could resume workouts. McCarthy is currently on the disabled list because of a sore shoulder.

McCarthy gives all the credit for his quick recovery from the seizure to his wife.

“She took control of the situation pretty quickly,†he said. “That’s the story I’ve been told. She might have dressed it up a little bit, but I’m pretty sure she was a superhero there. I know she’s talked about how some of the employees there [at the restaurant] were pretty good.

“Some of the people eating there helped too. If anybody reads it or hears about it, thank you to them for helping and making it go as smooth as possible.â€
