Juan Manuel Marquez could fight Manny Pacquiao again, promoter says

Juan Manuel Marquez has instructed his Mexico-based promoter that he plans to fight twice more.

Marquez, 40, is additionally a prominent candidate to be Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent, his U.S. promoter, Bob Arum, told The Times on Wednesday.

Reports from Mexico have indicated Marquez (55-7-1, 40 knockouts) has immediate interest only in a rematch with unbeaten Coachella Valley fighter Timothy Bradley, who edged Marquez by split-decision in October.

Arum said Marquez, Bradley and Ruslan Provodnikov are the three possible opponents for Pacquiao in April in Las Vegas.

Marquez was deeply angered after Nevada judges gave his most recent bout to Bradley, saying afterward he would not return to fight in Las Vegas and was strongly leaning toward retirement.

Asked if Marquez said he would be willing to again fight in Las Vegas, Arum said, “I didn’t say that.†He said Marquez told his Mexico-based promoter, Fernando Beltran, he “wants two more fights.â€

Arum dismissed an Internet report that Floyd Mayweather Jr. was actually considering Pacquiao for his May 3 fight.

“I haven’t been following that and don’t care,†Arum said.

Regarding another report that Pacquiao is in deep debt to the Internal Revenue Service, Arum said, “It’s under control.â€
