Novak Djokovic hires Boris Becker as his new head coach

Novak Djokovic and Boris Becker have each won six Grand Slam singles championships.

But Djokovic wants more, so he has brought in the retired Becker as his head coach, joining a team that already includes Marian Vajda, Miljan Amanovic and Gebhard Phil-Gritsch.

“Boris brings new fresh approach, and together with Vajda he will make a winning combination,” Djokovic said Wednesday on his website. “My goal for 2014 is to play my best tennis and to get in shape for the Grand Slams and Masters 1000.”

Djokovic, who dropped to No. 2 in the world rankings at the end of last season, is looking to become the first man to win five Australian Open titles since the sport went professional in 1968. He won his fourth this year; it was his only Grand Slam title in 2013.

The Australian Open starts Jan. 13 in Melbourne.

Like Becker, Djokovic lacks only a French Open title on his Grand Slam resume.

“I am proud Novak invited me to become his head coach,” Becker said. “I will do my best to help him reach his goals, and I am sure we can achieve great things together.”

Djokovic added: “I am really excited to have the opportunity to work with Boris. He is a true legend, someone who has great tennis knowledge and his experience will help me win new trophies from the Grand Slams and other tournaments.”
