Most baseball fans would say that Mike Trout is the best player in baseball today. And if they don’t list him at No. 1, they would certainly have him in the top five. The Angels outfielder has arguably had the best first two seasons in baseball history. But he’s not Albert Pujols.

So, please don’t ask Pujols if he is motivated to put up the same numbers as Mike Trout, as he was in spring training.

“Can you imagine someone saying that to me?†Pujols told USA Today Sports. “Check out my numbers. I know what Mike Trout has done in his first two years is pretty special, but will you look at my numbers? I’ve been doing this for almost 14 years.’

“The only guy in baseball who can match the numbers I’ve put up is Barry Bonds, and someone is actually asking if I can put up numbers like Mike Trout? Are you freaking kidding me?â€

Pujols is correct that when you compare careers, he comes out way ahead. But he seems to be forgetting that Trout is his teammate, so perhaps a more diplomatic response was in order. Oh, and if he really thinks Barry Bonds is the only player who can match his numbers, he might want to check out Babe Ruth and Willie Mays.
