Michigan’s Sierra Romero is the college softball player of the year

Michigan infielder Sierra Romero has been selected the Amateur Softball Association/USA Softball college player of the year.

The senior ranks in the top 10 nationally with a .465 batting average, 19 home runs and a .585 on-base percentage, and is in the top five with 77 RBIs and a .916 slugging percentage.

Romero, who grew up in Murrieta, Calif., and was a top-five prospect coming out of Vista Murrieta High in 2012, already owns NCAA career records in runs (300) and grand slams (11)., and has 301 hits and 304 RBIs in her career.

She helped lead Michigan to its 12th NCAA Women’s College World Series. The award was announced on Tuesday.

The other finalists were Auburn’s Kasey Cooper and Florida’s Aleshia Ocasio.
