London Olympics: U.S. women lose in field hockey to South Africa

LONDON -- Previously winless South Africa crushed the United States, 7-0, in women’s field hockey Monday at Riverbank Arena in Olympic Park.
The U.S. team had allowed six goals total in their previous four games in pool play at the Olympics. They had suffered three one-goal losses and defeated Argentina, 1-0.
This was a stark reversal of the last meeting between the U.S. and South Africa, a 5-5 result last year in Dublin, Ireland.
South Africa and the United States already had been eliminated from semifinal contention. The Americans have one game remaining in the tournament.
