London Olympics: What to watch for on Thursday
- Share via
There are seemingly thousands of Olympics events each day. Here’s a guide on what to keep an eye out for on Day 6:
SWIMMING
It’s Lochte vs. Phelps, Part 2. Ryan Lochte won the first round at the start of the competition in the 400-meter IM. Michael Phelps finished a disappointing fourth. Thursday, it’s the 200 IM. Phelps should do better in the shorter race, but Lochte still had the fastest time in qualifying. Lochte will also be swimming against Tyler Clary in the 200-meter backstroke.
GYMNASTICS
Can’t get enough of the gold-medal-winning U.S. women? Well, two of them, Gabrielle Douglas and Alexandra Raisman will be going for medals in the all-around competition. Douglas is the better medal hopeful if she can get past the balance beam, which did her in at nationals. Perhaps the best all-around performer on the team is Jordyn Wieber, but mistakes in qualifying kept her out of the finals.
JUDO
Kayla Harrison is one of the more compelling stories at the Games. She overcame years of sexual abuse from her coach -- who was sent to prison -- to become one of the top judokas in the world. In 2010, she was the first U.S. person to win a gold at the world championships in 26 years. The U.S. has won one medal in the sport so far these Games, and Harrison is a good chance for a second.
ROWING
The U.S. women’s eight team is considered one of the best in the world, having won six straight world championships and the gold medal in Beijing. But in qualifying, the Canadian eight team was faster than the U.S.’ But, for perspective, they were in different heats and the U.S. won so convincingly it might have let up at the finish. The score will be settled Thursday.
