NBA: Cavaliers lose to last-place Mavericks, 104-97

Harrison Barnes scored 24 points and the last-place Dallas Mavericks knocked off a title contender for the second straight night, beating LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, 104-97, on Monday at Dallas.

Wesley Matthews 21 points, and rookie point guard Yogi Ferrell scored a career-high 19, a night after hitting clinching free throws in the final seconds of a win at San Antonio.

James had 23 points and Kyrie Irving scored 18 — but just one between them in the fourth quarter — for the defending champs.

Ferrell hit a three-point shot and a driving layup to give the Mavericks their biggest lead at 102-85.

at Boston 113, Detroit 109: Isaiah Thomas scored 24 of his 41 points in the fourth quarter and Celtics extended their winning streak to four games. Boston had to rally after Detroit surged midway through the fourth quarter and the teams traded the lead. Andre Drummond had 28 points and pulled down 22 rebounds for the Pistons.

at Philadelphia 122, Sacramento 119: Robert Covington had 23 points and 10 rebounds for the 76ers, who overcame 46 points from DeMarcus Cousins and won again without injured center Joel Embiid (left knee contusion). Down 16 in the first half, the Sixers scored 42 points in the third quarter and held on when Arron Afflalo missed a potential tying three-point shot at the horn.

at Miami 104, Brooklyn 96: Goran Dragic scored 20 points, Dion Waiters added 19 and the Heat pushed the NBA’s longest current winning streak to eight games. Miami took the lead for good with a 17-0 run late in the first half. Bojan Bogdanovic scored 16 points for the Nets, who’ve lost six straight and 17 of 18.

at Minnesota 111, Orlando 105 (OT): Andrew Wiggins, who forced overtime with a jumper with 10 seconds to play, finished with 27 points for the Timberwolves, whose Karl-Anthony Towns had 23 points and 12 rebounds. The Magic came back from nine points down with five minutes to play to take the lead late in regulation.

Memphis 115, at Phoenix 96: Mike Conley scored a career-high 38 points and the Grizzlies just missed a franchise record with 16 three-pointers. Conley had seven threes in 10 attempts. Devin Booker scored 22 for the Suns, but they never led and trailed by as many as 30 in matching its season worst with a fourth straight loss.
