Racing! We’re debuting a new handicapping feature
Hello, my name is John Cherwa, and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we break down a race from scratch.
Great news in that we are adding a new feature to the newsletter. Many of you have asked for handicapping tutorials or trends or inside things to look at. Rob Henie, who owns and writes the WCHR (West Coast Handicapping Report) and the ECHR (I think you can figure out the E), is joining Bob Ike — who gave newsletter readers a $34 winner on Saturday — to our stable of expert handicappers.
What Rob tries to do is impart lessons and strategies with his picks. We’re going to have him weigh in with a strategy once a week and also see how a professional handicapper looks at a race. It will also be a look at what he offers in the WCHR.
So, whaddya got for us today, Rob?
FIFTH RACE, Sunday at Santa Anita
This is a $16,000 non-winners of three lifetime offering at six furlongs. Top selection is HANK THE TANK (No. 7). He’s had issues with stringing races together, but that’s precisely why they need a big effort whenever he does make it to the track. Horses like this one aren’t the types of runners a trainer will say, “we’ll give him the race,†as there’s no guarantee they’ll be back any time soon. Because of this, they need a paycheck when he does run. You’ll notice the pattern of him firing off the layoff, basically justifying the thought process of what we’re discussing here. Another advantage this one has is the fact they can freely run for a $16,000 N3L, essentially dropping in class, knowing few want to claim a horse who shows up only sporadically, thus the ability to drop while probably untouched. Throw in the fact he’s shown he can rate off the flank of another, or, head to the front, and there’s just numerous angles to back this guy today, which is the correct way to stand behind a horse. RICK’S DREAM (No. 1) makes his 11th lifetime start today, but the pattern’s been one of good health, and a healthy horse is always a good thing, opening the door to a possible good effort, as the two go hand in hand, no exceptions. He also tries hard, never a bad thing to back in a horse, and we like the quick two-week turn around off the Los Al win. Some will point out he was defeated last month by MAKE IT A TRIPLE (No. 2) whom he faces again here today, so what’s different to believe he can turn the tables? We can reason ‘Triple appears to have a bit more of a liking for Del Mar, while our top pick can likely keep ‘Triple honest on the front end, outside of that one throughout.
Race Outlook: We like this trio to capture this event.
Win Contenders (order of preference): 7-1-2
X Out Runners (eliminating on the win end): 4
Positive Notes:
2 Tough It Out — This is a good spot off the layoff, and as a general but reliable rule, when a trainer adds blinkers off the time away, it’s more often than not indicative of a well meant effort forthcoming.
Negative Notes:
3 Tengas Ransom --- espite Baze and Mullins teaming up, even adding blinkers, we have a hard time backing a runner who returned off a layoff four weeks ago, NOT to be claimed for 50,000 in an optional claimer, yet today, less than a month later, “who wants him for 16,000?†We’ll make him come beat us.
6 Sindys Luck — Has had multiple chances around this N3L level.
8 Bolitar — Took him a long time to switch leads before galloping out poorly.
Top pick: Hank The Tank (No. 7 3-1 Talamo)
Second Choice: Rick’s Dream (No. 1 6-1 Franco)
The West Coast Handicapping Report can be found at https://www.westcoasthorseracing.com It has been endorsed by leading trainers, handicappers and industry sources.
In the interest of accuracy …
On Saturday, I listed the sale prices of all the horses that ran in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and the Kentucky Derby. I listed a few as private sales, which is the Equibase designation. Well, Jeremy Balan, West Coast racing savant for the Bloodhorse, pointed out that most of those were homebreds, thus no sale price. And, of course, he was right.
I’m still learning, and thanks to Jeremy and others in the Santa Anita press box, they are always willing to help. So, thanks, folks. And, you might want to follow Jeremy at @BH_JBalan. You won’t regret.
Santa Anita review
Three stakes races on Saturday’s card. Here’s a look at each one.
Robert J. Frankel Stakes: In a very big upset Midnight Crossing, at 22-1, won the $100,000 race over 11/8 miles on the turf. She benefited from slow fractions (24.27, 48.74, 1:12.90, 1:36.36) to win by a half-length over favorite Elysea’s World.
“She broke a little awkwardly but I gave her a little squeeze and she just jumped on the bridle,†said winning jockey Brice Blanc. “At the three-quarters pole, that’s when the running started. She was there for me.â€
The Richard Baltas filly paid $47.60, $12.80 and $5.00.
American Oaks: Daddys Lil Darling, under a confident ride from Mike Smith, went three-wide in the stretch, overtook leader New Money Honey and held up Madam Dancealot to win the $300,000 Grade 1 race over 1¼ miles on the grass.
“I didn’t want to have to wait for room,†Smith said. “The horse right in front of me [Javier Castellano, on New Money Honey] spread the turn a little but I knew he was going to drop back in. I went outside of him anyway and he dropped back in and I was able to really get a good momentum going at that point which I needed because Corey [Nakatani] was coming on my outside.â€
Daddys Lil Darling paid $6.00, $3.60 and $3.00 for trainer Kenny McPeek.
Midnight Lute Stakes: It was a little dicey down the stretch when winner Silent Bird ducked down to the rail but the stewards found no problem as he won the $100,000 6½-furlong race. Calculator had to steady when he suddenly found Silent Bird right in front of him and he seemingly lost any momentum he was gathering.
“We put the blinkers on and that certainly put a little more speed on him,†said winning trainer Mark Glatt. “It was a typical one hole draw. He doesn’t like dirt in his face, so I told Kent [Desormeaux], ‘Whatever you do, let’s try, with the rail draw, to get to the outside.’ When he broke a little flat, Kent kind of asked him to run and then he jumped into the bit, so at that point he figured to just keep his position and he kept it all the way.â€
Silent Bird paid $8.20, $4.60 and $2.80.
Santa Anita preview
Sunday’s nine-race card is pretty tepid for a Sunday. There are four turf races including the featured ninth, the $75,000 Blue Norther Stakes. It’s a one-mile grass race for 2-year-old fillies, on their last day as 2-year-olds.
One interesting thing is that the top three horses all have new jockeys. And pretty good ones, too. The favorite is Retro at 3-1. She has a first and third in two starts and switched from Flavien Prat to Mike Smith. At 7-2 is Treasuring, who shipped over here for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, where she finished a lackluster seventh. But it was a BC race. She picks up Rajiv Maragh as her jockey. Also, at 7-2 is One Fast Broad, who has won here last two races, both on the dirt. She goes from Corey Nakatani to Gary Stevens in the saddle.
The fields are all pretty full, with eight being the smallest field in any of the races.

Bob Ike SA play of the day
FIRST RACE No. 8 El Tovar (9-2)
Honest downhill turf sprinter from Richard Baltas stable was in too steep last time but gets back with his friends today and reunites with Rafael Bejarano, who rode him to two previous wins over this layout. Looks like he should get an honest pace to set up his late run.
Saturday Result: Urban Bourbon ($33.80) wired the field to pull off the upset win in the ninth race.

Los Alamitos alert
If you plan to bet the quarters this New Year’s Eve, you’re out of luck. There won’t be any racing at Los Alamitos.
I didn’t know this, but quarter horses are notorious big partiers. It usually starts around dusk where they spike the molasses and about mid-evening the alfalfa starts flying. Sometime they have theme parties and dress up like humans. The resolutions they make, well they rarely keep by their first timed workout. But, hey, or is it hay, is that any different than us?
So, that’s a long way of saying Ed Burgart’s pick won’t be back until Friday.
