Kobe Bryant, Nick Young struggle as Clippers rout Lakers, 114-89

Clippers 114 - Lakers 89 (end of regulation)

The Lakers never truly competed on Wednesday night, getting blown out by the Clippers at Staples Center.

With Ronnie Price out with a broken nose, and the flu, Chris Paul dominated the Lakers, scoring 24 points with 11 assists and three steals in just over 31 minutes.

Blake Griffin scored 27 with nine rebounds and eight assists. DeAndre Jordan notched a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Paul, Griffin and Jordan weren’t even needed in the fourth quarter.

Jeremy Lin started for Price, scoring 12 points with three assists. Wesley Johnson also sat out (hip). His replacement, Wayne Ellington, scored 13 points in a game-high 40 minutes. Jordan Clarkson led the Lakers with 14 points.

Kobe Bryant struggled in his 28 minutes, missing 10 of 12 shots, to score just four points. He did lead Lakers with eight rebounds and seven assists, but it was a difficult game for the 36-year old veteran.

Rookie center Tarik Black made his Lakers’ debut, playing the entire fourth quarter, actually out-scoring Bryant with five points, with a pair of dunks and a free throw.

The Lakers shot 43.5% from the field. Nick Young struggled to score his 11 points, hitting four of just 15 shots. Jordan Hill added 13 and Carlos Boozer had 10.

The Clippers shot 47.1% from the field but out-scored the Lakers at the free throw line 22-10 (taking 13 more attempts).

With the loss, the Lakers drop to 11-25. They’ll host the Orlando Magic (13-25) on Friday night at Staples Center. The Clippers (24-12) play next on Saturday at home against the Dallas Mavericks (26-11).

Clippers 99 - Lakers 62 (end of third quarter)

The Clippers continued to bombard the Lakers in the third quarter, out-scoring the road team 29-14 in the period.

Both Kobe Bryant and Nick Young struggled to score. Bryant managed four points on two of 12 shooting. Young scored five on two of seven. The Lakers shot 40.6% from the field.

The Clippers were led by Chris Paul with 24 points and 11 assists. Blake Griffin neared a triple-double with 27 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. The team shot 49.3% from the field.

Jordan Hill and Wayne Ellington led the Lakers with 13 apiece.

The Clippers extended their lead to 22 in the closing seconds of the second quarter, on a windmill dunk from Blake Griffin, and a DeAndre Jordan putback.

Kobe Bryant went scoreless in 16 minutes, missing all four shot attempts but dishing six assists against two turnovers.

Chris Paul led all scorers with 17 points on seven of nine shooting. Griffin scored 16 and Matt Barnes 14. Jordan was two points short of a double-double with 10 rebounds.

Four Lakers scored 10 points, including Jordan Hill, Wayne Ellington, Jeremy Lin and Carlos Boozer. The team shot 44.4% from the field.

The Clippers hit 57.8% of their shots and 47.1% from three-point range (8-17).

Clippers 34 - Lakers 24 (end of first quarter)

The Clippers took an early lead in the first quarter, finishing the period up 10.

Matt Barnes led all scorers with 11 points. Chris Paul added nine with three assists as the Clippers shot 54.5% from the field.

The Lakers started Wayne Ellington and Jeremy Lin for the absent Wesley Johnson (hip) and Ronnie Price (nine). The team shot 45.5% from the field, led by Jordan Hill with eight. Lin had seven, including a late three-pointer, while Ellington added five.

Kobe Bryant didn’t score with four assists in almost 10 minutes.

Pregame

The Clippers (23-12) play host to the Lakers (11-24) on Wednesday at Staples Center.

Kobe Bryant is expected to play after resting on Monday, when the Lakers traveled to Portland and lost, 98-94, to the Trail Blazers. Ronnie Price is doubtful to play through a broken nose (injured in Portland). Jeremy Lin would start in his place.

The Clippers are coming off a 107-98 loss on Monday to the Atlanta Hawks (26-8).
