Galaxy coach wishes David Beckham well with new team

David Beckham’s plan to play for Paris-St. Germain drew warm wishes Friday from the Galaxy, which Beckham helped lead to a second consecutive Major League Soccer title two months ago.

“It’s great. We’re wishing him the very best,” Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena said after his club finished a preseason practice game at Home Depot Center.

“I hope it works out, he wins another championship and that he has a good experience and helps PSG,” Arena said.

Beckham, 37, on Thursday signed a five-month deal to play for the French team, with his unspecified salary being donated to a children’s charity.

The Galaxy were almost at full strength Friday, with forward Robbie Keane having returned from training with his former team, Tottenham in England, and defenders Omar Gonzalez and A.J. DeLaGarza back from working with the U.S. national team.

Keane, 32, said his latest stint with Tottenham “was nice and intense for me, which was quite good after having six weeks off.”

Still missing is captain Landon Donovan, who is on an extended leave of absence.

Arena has said Donovan plans to return to the Galaxy this season. When asked Friday when that might occur, Arena replied: “Don’t know yet. We’re hopeful we’ll have something a little bit more definitive in the near future, but [we have] nothing at this point.”

The Galaxy open their MLS season March 3 at home against the Chicago Fire.
