Andy Reid endorses Michael Vick as Eagles QB -- more or less

Philadelphia Coach Andy Reid says Michael Vick is the Eagles’ starting quarterback right now.

Of course, the Eagles aren’t playing today or even this week for that matter.

By the time Philadelphia plays again, on Oct. 28 against the undefeated Atlanta Falcons, who knows who will be calling the signals for the 3-3 team -- the struggling Vick or hotshot rookie Nick Foles?

Reid told reporters Tuesday: “As I sit here today, Michael’s the starting quarterback.â€

As Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer points out, that’s basically the same endorsement Reid gave defensive coordinator Juan Castillo on Monday, one day before letting him go.

“I’m just telling the truth,†Reid said Tuesday. “That’s what I’m saying to you. Right now, Michael Vick is the starting quarterback.â€

Foles looked great during the preseason, completing 40 of 63 passes for 553 yards and six touchdowns with two interceptions. Of course, much of that came against the opponents’ backups.

Vick, who has thrown for eight touchdowns and rushed for another, has accounted for 13 of the Eagles’ 17 turnovers this season, with eight interceptions and five lost fumbles.

“You obviously can’t have that many turnovers,†Reid said. “You can’t do that. If you can’t have that many as an offense, you surely can’t have that many as a quarterback.â€

So while Vick is the Eagles’ starting quarterback at this moment, Reid doesn’t sound like he’s ruling out a quarterback change somewhere down the road -- and it’s a long time until the team’s next game.

“I’m looking at everything,†Reid said. “I’m going to try and do what’s best for our offense in this case and then whatever that decision is, I’m going to do. Right now, Michael’s the guy.â€
