Texans take top spot in NFL power rankings, Steelers move to 9th
The latest edition of The Times’ NFL power rankings are out, and we have a new No. 1 team: The Houston Texans, who upended the No. 3 Chicago Bears last weekend, 13-6.
The previous No. 1 team, the Atlanta Falcons, fell out of the top spot, but only to No. 2, after their 31-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints.
Atlanta Coach Mike Smith’s Falcons teams are 2-7 against the Saints. But not everyone on the Falcons was impressed with New Orleans.
“It’s not like they came out and won a game today,†frustrated Falcons receiver Roddy White said. “I think we kind of gave it to them.â€
The Saints won when New Orleans cornerback Jabari Greer batted away a fourth-down pass by the Falcons, who were two yards away from a touchdown that would have kept them undefeated.
“I was kind of depressed before that play,†Greer said of his game-clinching knockdown. “I saw my name on the waiver wire.... Being able to go out there and make a play for our team and be able to celebrate after everything that happened and just to win that way, it’s a gift.â€
The teams meet again in Atlanta at the end of the month.
Rounding out the top 10: No. 4 Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers, Steelers and at No. 10, the New York Giants.
Jacksonville still resides in the basement, the 32nd ranked of 32 teams.
