Dario Franchitti, Scott Dixon fastest in final Indy 500 practice

INDIANAPOLIS - Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon ran the fastest laps Friday in final practice for Sunday’s Indianapolis 500.
Franchitti topped the speed chart at 222.360 mph on “Carb Day,” a throwback term to past years when mechanics would make their final pre-race tune-ups to the engines’ carburetors.
Dixon, his teammate at Chip Ganassi Racing, was next at 222.274 mph. Marco Andretti was third at 221.702 mph around the rectangular, 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Franchitti is a two-time winner of the race, in 2007 and 2010, and Dixon won in 2008.
In last weekend’s qualifying to set the race’s 33-car field, neither driver qualified particularly well. Dixon will start the race in 15th and Franchitti in the 16th spot.
But Friday’s practice indicated both were finding the necessary speed from their Honda engines to be competitive for the win. The top six cars in qualifying, led by pole-sitter Ryan Briscoe of Team Penske, are using Chevrolet engines.
