USC wins fourth consecutive NCAA men’s tennis title in all-nighter

The USC men’s tennis team continued its domination, winning its fourth consecutive NCAA championship with a 4-2 victory over Virginia at Athens, Ga.

USC endured rain delays and a venue change to defeat the Cavaliers in a match that started Tuesday at 5 p.m. and ended Wednesday around 1 a.m.

USC, winner of 20 NCAA men’s tennis championships, became the first school since Stanford to win four consecutive titles. The Cardinal won in 1995 through ’98.

USC trailed Virginia, 1-0, after losing the doubles point. Following a 2½-hour rain delay, the match moved indoors at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

USC’s Steve Johnson, the nation’s top-ranked singles player, defeated Jarmere Jenkins, 6-3, 6-2.

But USC’s Daniel Nguyen lost to Mitchell Frank, 6-3, 6-2.

USC’s Emilio Gomez defeated Drew Courtney, 6-4, 6-2, and USC’s Ray Sarmiento defeated Alex Domijan, 6-4, 7-5.

Freshman Yannick Hanfmann clinched the victory for USC with a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (3) win against Justin Shane.

USC freshman Robert Quiroz had lost the first set against Virginia’s Julen Uriguen, 2-6, before coming back to win the second, 7-6 (3). Quiroz trailed, 3-4, in the third set but the match was suspended when Hanfmann clinched the team victory.
