U.S. routs Germany, 8-0, at world junior hockey championship

The United States routed Germany, 8-0, Thursday in its opening game at the world junior hockey championship tournament in Ufa, Russia.

Alex Galchenyuk and Riley Barber each had a goal and two assists for the U.S., who is tied for first place with Canada in Group B. The Canadians defeated Germany 9-3 on Wednesday.

U.S. goaltender John Gibson, who is a Ducks prospect, stopped 19 shots through two periods. He was replaced for the third by Jon Gillies, who made seven saves.

Sean Kuraly, Jacob Trouba, Shayne Gostisbehere, Ryan Hartman, J.T. Miller and Seth Jones had the other goals for the U.S.

The U.S. plays again Friday, when it takes on host country Russia.

In the only other game Thursday, Mike Kunzle scored twice as Switzerland beat Latvia 7-2.
