Jovan Belcher texted that he would shoot girlfriend

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher was apparently worried he would lose his baby and money to his longtime girlfriend before fatally shooting her and killing himself, according to newly released police reports.

Belcher also complained about Kasandra Perkins, the mother of the couple’s 3-month-old daughter, in conversations and text messages sent to a woman he was dating on the side, the reports show.

In one text message sent in late October or early November, Belcher wrote he “would shoot” Perkins “if she didn’t leave him alone.” The girlfriend told police that Belcher said “his child’s mother threatened to take all his money and his child if they split up” and “knew exactly how to press his buttons and make him angry.”

Belcher shot Perkins multiple times in their home on Dec. 1 and then drove to team headquarters, where he killed himself in front of his coach and general manager after telling them he “wasn’t able to get enough help.”

The prosecutor’s office in Jackson County, Mo., reviewed the police reports before closing the case Friday. The deaths of Belcher, 25, and Perkins, 22, were ruled a murder-suicide, prosecutor’s office spokesman Mike Mansur said Tuesday.

BASEBALL: Red Sox make a deal with Stephen Drew

The Boston Red Sox moved forward with their strategy of giving free agents short-term contracts by reaching a $9.5-million, one-year agreement with shortstop Stephen Drew.

A person familiar with the negotiations told the Associated Press that Drew will take a physical before the deal can be finalized.

Boston also finalized a $4.25 million, one-year contract with 37-year-old reliever Koji Uehara, a deal agreed to two weeks ago at the winter meetings.

Drew hit .250 with five homers and 16 RBIs in 39 games for the Oakland Athletics last season after being traded by Arizona on Aug. 20. In 40 games with the Diamondbacks, he hit .193 with two homers and 12 RBIs.

Right-handed reliever Santiago Casilla has completed a $15-million, three-year contract with the World Series champion San Francisco Giants. The 32-year-old Casilla went 7-6 with a 2.84 ERA and 25 saves last season. He made 73 appearances. ... Pitcher John Lannan and the Philadelphia Phillies have finalized a $2.5-million, one-year contract. The 28-year-old lefty was 4-1 with a 4.13 ERA in six starts for the NL East-champion Washington Nationals this year. He also made 24 starts for Triple-A Syracuse, going 9-11 with a 4.30 ERA. ... The Tampa Bay Rays have signed right-hander Roberto Hernandez, formerly known as Fausto Carmona. The 32-year-old Hernandez has pitched seven years in the majors, all with Cleveland. He was 0-3 with a 7.53 ERA last season. Hernandez was arrested last winter in the Dominican Republic on false identity charges. They were dropped after he completed a work program. ... The Minnesota Twins have agreed with right-hander Mike Pelfrey on a $4-million, one-year contract. Pelfrey was an innings eater during a four-year run with the New York Mets before missing almost all of last season after Tommy John surgery. He went 50-54 with a 4.36 ERA in seven seasons in New York.

ETC.: Austria’s Hirscher wins slalom

Defending overall World Cup champion Marcel Hirscher of Austria was fastest in both runs at Madonna di Campiglio, Italy, winning a night slalom marred by the death of a gatekeeper. Hirscher moved past American rival Ted Ligety into second place in the overall standings. Ligety, who has dominated in giant slalom this season, finished ninth.

The race was delayed for about 15 minutes during the first run. After the first eight starters, a 70-year-old gatekeeper became ill. Organizers say he had a history of heart problems and medical personnel attempted to resuscitate him for about an hour.

Lionel Messi agreed to a new contract with Barcelona that will keep him with the Spanish powerhouse through 2018. The 25-year-old Messi, a three-time world player of the year, has 90 goals so far in 2012, surpassing Gerd Mueller’s 40-year-old record of 85 in a calendar year. ... Major League Soccer’s season will open March 2 with six games on its earliest start date, including Columbus at Chivas USA. The two-time defending champion Galaxy opens at home against Chicago the following day.

Gary Gaines, the 63-year-old high school coach at the center of the “Friday Night Lights” book and film, has resigned from Odessa Permian. He leaves with a 69-28-1 record in eight years as Permian’s head coach, including a 23-21 mark in his last four years.

Matt Bush, a former top overall major league draft pick, has been sentenced to four years and three months in prison for a drunken driving hit-and-run crash in Florida. As part of a deal, the 27-year-old pleaded no contest to driving under the influence with serious bodily injury.
