Bills cut Vince Young, acquire Tarvaris Jackson

Vince Young was too inconsistent to win the Buffalo Bills’ backup quarterback job, so now the team is giving Tarvaris Jackson a shot.

The Bills shuffled backup quarterbacks Monday by completing a deal to acquire Jackson in a trade with Seattle. They then cut Young. The moves coincided with the Seahawks’ deeming Jackson expendable after naming rookie Russell Wilson their starter, and it came two days after Young struggled in his bid to lock up the No. 2 job in a 38-7 exhibition loss to Pittsburgh.

The New Orleans Saints changed their practice and travel plans, heading for Cincinnati as Tropical Storm Isaac headed for the Gulf Coast.

Interim Coach Joe Vitt called off practice and meetings so players could evacuate their families. The Saints also contacted the Cincinnati Bengals and received approval to practice at Paul Brown Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

The Saints are scheduled to play their final exhibition game Thursday in Tennessee. The team considered flying there directly ahead of the storm but couldn’t work out the logistics.

Baltimore Ravens star linebacker Terrell Suggs has been put on the physically unable to perform list.

That means Suggs will have to miss at least the first six weeks of the season. The move comes as no surprise because Suggs is recovering from a torn right Achilles’ tendon, an injury that should keep him sidelined at least into November.

The Carolina Panthers released veteran kicker Olindo Mare only one year after giving him a four-year, $12-million contract.

Justin Medlock, a journeyman kicker from UCLA who last played for the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats, appears to have won the job with the Panthers.

The New England Patriots released veteran wide receivers Jabar Gaffney and Donte’ Stallworth.

The New York Jets and St. Louis Rams swapped struggling right tackles as New York acquired Jason Smith from St. Louis for Wayne Hunter.

Colsaerts, Poulter chosen

European Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal said that picking Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium — along with England’s Ian Poulter — as his wild-card selections is not a gamble.

The 32-year-old Poulter will be competing in his fourth Ryder Cup since making his debut in 2004, and Colsaerts will be playing in his first and is the only rookie on Olazabal’s squad.
