Do you agree with Augusta National’s decision? [Poll]

Augusta National Golf Club admitted its first two female members Monday, changing a men-only policy that stood for the club’s first 80 years.

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina financier Darla Moore are the first two women allowed to join the club, which is closed for the summer and will reopen in October.

Until now, women had been permitted to play on the course as guests only. The club came under heavy fire back in 2002, spurred by Martha Burk of the National Council of Women’s Organizations, but then-club chairman Hootie Johnson stood strong.

Augusta National did not have a black member until 1990.

Reaction to Monday’s news among Times readers has been mixed, with comments on latimes.com/sports ranging from “Glad Augusta National came into this century, way overdue” to “When are the all-women clubs going to let the men in now?!?! Hypocrites!!!”
