In baseball trades, there are winners and, well, losers

Baseball’s non-waiver trade deadline was Tuesday and it’s too early to judge who got the best of the deals, but staff writer Lance Pugmire does it anyway:

Win-win

Angels trade shortstop Jean Segura, right-handers Ariel Pena and Johnny Hellweg to Milwaukee for right-hander Zack Greinke:

Greinke bolsters a rotation led by Jered Weaver in pursuit of the American League West lead; Brewers, looking to future, land confident Segura and likely big league arm in Pena.

Atlanta trades right-handers Arodys Vizcaino and Jaye Chapman to the Chicago Cubs for left-hander Paul Maholm and outfielder Reed Johnson:

Maholm closed July on a roll and Johnson can add a few key hits; Chicago is thrilled by future of reliever Vizcaino, 21.

Detroit trades right-hander Jacob Turner, catcher Rob Brantly and left-hander Brian Flynn to Miami for right-hander Anibal Sanchez and second baseman Omar Infante:

The playoff-chasing Tigers plugged holes in the rotation and middle infield; slumping Marlins got a potential future ace in Turner.

Win-lose

Kansas City trades left-hander Donnie Joseph and right-hander J.C. Sulbaran to Cincinnati for right-handed reliever Jonathan Broxton:

Royals got two prized arms in reliever Joseph and prospect Sulbaran; Reds needed help beyond the bullpen.

Chicago White Sox trade left-hander Pedro Hernandez and infielder Eduardo Escobar to Minnesota for left-hander Francisco Liriano:

American League Central-leading White Sox help themselves in exchange for … next to nothing.

San Francisco trades outfielder Nate Schierholtz, catcher Tommy Joseph and right-hander Seth Rosin to Philadelphia for outfielder Hunter Pence:

Giants get a productive hitter; Phillies come across as unfamiliar with prospects-for-veteran philosophy.

Dodgers trade outfielder Leon Landry and right-hander Logan Bawcom to Seattle for right-hander Brandon League:

Ex-closer League upgrades Dodgers bullpen; Mariners sink into vicious cycle of talent dumping.

Pittsburgh trades left-handers Rudy Owens and Colton Cain and outfielder Robbie Grossman to Houston for left-hander Wandy Rodriguez:

The Pirates got the Astros to fork over $12 million of Rodriguez’s pay, while Houston crumbles into oblivion.

Lose-lose

Texas trades third baseman Christian Villanueva and right-hander Kyle Hendricks to the Cubs for right-hander Ryan Dempster:

Despite the current nifty earned-run average, Dempster isn’t really a shutdown starter; Cubs receive only medium-range prospects.

St. Louis trades third baseman Zack Cox to Miami for right-hander Edward Mujica:

If the defending World Series champions are going to rally again they needed more than a setup reliever from a South Florida fire sale.
