Update: The Galaxy can clinch the MLS’ Supporters’ Shield — for the league’s best regular-season record — with a win over Real Salt Lake on Saturday, provided New England wins or ties against Seattle earlier in the day. It would be the Galaxy’s second Shield in as many seasons, but this one comes with the bonus of a first-round bye in the playoffs. A win would also give the Galaxy 18 victories—– matching the MLS single-season record — and 64 points, equaling the second-highest total in league history. The Galaxy, which has yet to lose at home this season, will likely start Josh Saunders in goal while regular keeper Donovan Ricketts continues to nurse a strained quad. Saunders has been spectacular in Ricketts’ place, posting seven shutouts, and another Saturday would give the Galaxy 17 shutouts on the season, tying another MLS single-season record. Saunders’ job will be made easier by the absence of Real Salt Lake midfielder Kyle Beckerman, who will sit out after earning a red card in his last game. The Galaxy will be near full strength with midfielder David Beckham back after sitting out Wednesday’s CONCACAF Champions League match with Morelia (Mexico). Robbie Keane, who has been slowed with a muscle strain in his right leg, will also be available.
