Angels defeat Athletics, 8-7, in spring game
Angels 8, Athletics 7
AT THE PLATE: Monday’s lineup was the one the Angels hope to roll out on opening day — minus first baseman Kendry Morales, who is still rehabbing his broken ankle. For the most part, the lineup produced: Torii Hunter walked twice, Bobby Abreu doubled twice and Peter Bourjos scored twice. Of the starters, only shortstop Erick Aybar and catcher Jeff Mathis failed to reach base.
ON THE MOUND: Just call Angels starter Joel Pineiro Mr. March. With two scoreless innings against the A’s, he ran his spring-training streak to 24 appearances without a loss dating to 2006. And Monday’s win was his 10th in a row over that span. New Angels reliever Scott Downs also pitched well, allowing just a single in his only inning.
EXTRA BASES: When Gil Velazquez swiped second in the sixth inning, it gave the Angels seven stolen bases in three games…The Angels batted just .235 in 17 at-bats with runners in scoring position.
UP NEXT: Jered Weaver faces the Cincinnati Reds and Johnny Cueto at noon PST Tuesday at Tempe.
ON THE AIR: TV: FSW. Radio: 830.
