Former Lakers and Clippers Coach Mike Dunleavy takes first collegiate coaching job at Tulane

Former Lakers and Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy took his first college coaching job, replacing the fired Ed Conroy at Tulane, which last made the NCAA tournament in 1995. Dunleavy, 62, had a 15-year pro playing career has coached four NBA teams, most recently the Clippers from 2003 to 2010. He previously coached the Lakers (1990-92), Milwaukee (1992-96) and Portland (1997-2001).

UNLV hires Beard

Nevada Las Vegas hired Arkansas Little Rock’s Chris Beard as coach, three days after Mick Cronin opted to stay at Cincinnati after meeting with UNLV officials. Beard, 42, is coming off his first season as a Division I coach, having led the Trojans to a Sun Belt Conference-record 30 wins and an NCAA tournament bid one year after a 13-18 finish. He replaces Dave Rice, who was fired in January.

Wooden Award

Oklahoma guard Buddy Hield, who led the Sooners to victory in the NCAA West Regional on Saturday in Anaheim, is one of 10 finalists for the John R. Wooden Award. Also on the Wooden All-America team, whose members must maintain at least a 2.0 grade-point average and be making progress toward graduation: Malcolm Brogdon of Virginia, Brice Johnson of North Carolina, Tyler Ulis of Kentucky, Denzel Valentine of Michigan State, Grayson Allen of Duke, Kris Dunn of Providence, Perry Ellis of Kansas, Yogi Ferrell of Indiana and Georges Niang of Iowa State. The Wooden player of the year will be announced April 8 in Los Angeles.

Western Kentucky hired Rick Stansbury as coach. Stansbury, 56, spent the last two seasons as an assistant at Texas A&M, and before that more than two decades at Mississippi State, including 14 seasons as head coach.

Gabe Vincent scored 20 points to lead UC Santa Barbara to a 70-63 win over Northern Illinois in the first round of the Vegas 16 tournament in Las Vegas.

Arizona freshman guard Justin Simon said he will transfer after playing sparingly this season. . . . Michigan State sophomore forwards Marvin Clark Jr. and Javon Bess said they plan to transfer to seek larger roles elsewhere. . . . Miami sophomore guard James Palmer has decided to transfer after averaging 12 minutes a game as a reserve this season. . . . Florida guard DeVon Walker said he intends to transfer for his final year of eligibility after graduating this spring.

Louisiana State junior guard Tim Quarterman is leaving to enter the NBA draft. . . . Guard Dwayne Bacon said he will withdraw his name for the NBA draft and return to Florida State for his sophomore season.
