No. 8 Maryland prevails over host Ohio State, 66-61
Melo Trimble scored 20 points, Jake Layman added 16 points and 10 rebounds, and No. 8 Maryland made six free throws in the final 25 seconds to beat Ohio State, 66-61, on Sunday at Columbus, Ohio.
Trimble hit a three-pointer from the left corner with 2 minutes 3 seconds remaining for a 60-55 lead before Marc Loving made a pair of foul shots for Ohio State to trim the lead to three.
Maryland’s Robert Carter, who had 10 points, then made both shots from the line with 24.4 seconds left. JaQuan Lyle made one of two foul shots for the Buckeyes to cut the deficit to 62-58, but Rasheed Sulaimon hit two free throws for Maryland (19-3, 8-2 Big Ten Conference) with 13.5 seconds to go.
Jae’Sean Tate, who had 16 points for Ohio State (14-9, 6-4), made a three-pointer with 5.9 to go but Trimble was fouled and made two more foul shots with 5.4 remaining to seal the win.
Ohio State, which lost to the Terrapins by 35 points earlier this month, went ahead 51-50 on Kam Williams’ jumper with six minutes left, but Trimble hit two foul shots to regain the Maryland lead.
At No. 3 Iowa 85, Northwestern 71: Peter Jok had 22 of his 26 points in the second half to help the Hawkeyes send the Wildcats to their fifth straight loss. Jarrod Uthoff scored 23 for Iowa (17-4, 8-1).
Tre Demps had a season-high 30 points for Northwestern (15-8, 3-7).
No. 6 Villanova 68, at St. John’s 53: Josh Hart had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Kris Jenkins added 14 points and 11 rebounds help the Wildcats improve to 18-3, 8-1 in the Big East Conference. The Red Storm (7-15, 0-9) suffered its 12th straight loss.
Vlllanova held onto first place in the conference by bouncing back from a horrible first half, in which it shot seven for 30 but pulled away in the final minutes. The Wildcats shot 50% in the second half and held at least a 10-point lead over the final 13 minutes.
The Wildcats had a nine-game winning streak snapped by No. 10 Providence in their previous game.
At No. 12 Michigan State 96, Rutgers 62: The Spartans (19-4, 6-4 Big Ten) tied a school record with 17 three-pointers and won their third in a row since a three-game losing streak. Michigan State’s Denzel Valentine scored 20 against the Scarlet Knights (6-16, 0-9), were led by Mike Williams with 18 points. The Spartans went on a 20-0 run in the second half that brought their lead to 78-43.
No. 22 Wichita State 78, at Evansville 65: The Shockers (16-5, 10-0 Missouri Valley Conference) relied on stout defense, holding the Purple Aces (18-5, 7-3) to just 23.8% shooting in the first half. Fred VanVleet scored 32 for Wichita State, which led 48-28 with 12:10 left.
at No. 25 Notre Dame 85, Wake Forest 62: Zach Auguste had 21 points and 12 rebounds and Demetrius Jackson added 14 points, eight assists and seven rebounds in his return after missing a game because of a pulled hamstring. The Fighting Irish improved to 15-6, 6-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Demon Deacons (10-11, 1-8), who never led, have lost six in a row.
