Baseball notes: Atlanta rotation takes another hit, losing Gavin Floyd

Atlanta put pitcher Gavin Floyd on the disabled list because of a broken bone in his right elbow, the latest setback to the Braves’ jumbled rotation.

Floyd suffered the unusual injury — to the olecranon, the bony tip of the ulna that sticks out at the curve of the elbow — while pitching against Washington on Thursday.

Detroit reliever Joel Zumaya had a similar injury in 2010 and never pitched in the big leagues again; he tore a ligament in his elbow while attempting a comeback during spring training in 2012.

Floyd recently recovered from Tommy John ligament replacement surgery and was making his ninth start since his return. The Braves lost two starters, Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy, for the season when both required Tommy John surgery during spring training.

Cincinnati sent struggling left-hander Tony Cingrani to triple-A Louisville and said reliever Sean Marshall would have surgery on his left shoulder. . . . Pittsburgh Manager Clint Hurdle said Mark Melancon would close games in place of struggling Jason Grilli, who has blown four save opportunities this year. . . . Arizona designated former closer J.J. Putz for assignment. . . .

Cleveland recalled right-hander Vinnie Pestano from Columbus and optioned right-hander Zach McAllister to the triple-A club. . . . Outfielder Yasmani Tomas, who according to official Cuban league statistics hit .275 with 10 homers and 59 RBIs in 97 games for Havana’s powerhouse ballclub Industriales, has defected to the U.S., Cuban authorities said.
