Baseball notes: Yankees acquire Brandon McCarthy, cut Alfonso Soriano

The New York Yankees obtained help for their depleted rotation Sunday, acquiring veteran right-hander Brandon McCarthy from Arizona, and cut ties with veteran outfielder Alfonso Soriano.

The Diamondbacks sent McCarthy, 3-10 with a 5.01 ERA this year, and cash to New York for left-hander Vidal Nuno. The move came after Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia had a setback with his right knee, possibly ending his season. New York was unable to work out a trade this week for the Cubs’ Jeff Samardzija, who instead was dealt to Oakland.

Soriano, 38, was designated for assignment after hitting .221 with six homers and 23 RBIs in 67 games. The Yankees had brought him back this year after he hit 17 home runs in 58 games for them last season.

Cleveland put leadoff hitter Michael Bourn on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring. . . . Mets left-hander Jonathon Niese is on the DL because of left shoulder fatigue. . . . St. Louis activated rookie second baseman Kolten Wong, who missed 15 days with a bruised shoulder. . . . Pittsburgh put shortstop Clint Barmes on the DL with a left groin strain.
