It’s only the second week of the track and field season, and St. John Bosco junior shot putter Matt Katnik and Mater Dei senior sprinter Curtis Godin have a lot to be excited about.

At the South County Classic on Friday at San Clemente, Katnik set a school record with a mark of 61 feet, 11 1/2 inches.

Katnik, who was offered a scholarship by Stanford in track and field, is St. John Bosco’s 6-foot-4, 300-pound standout offensive lineman. But the shot put is the event where he could be making lots of noise this season.

“I’m ecstatic,†Katnik said.

He hopes to be reaching 68 feet by the end of the season.

Godin, a former baseball player, ran career-best times of 10.50 in the 100 and 21.29 in the 200. The 100 time was a school record.

Orange Lutheran pole vaulter Carl Johannson went 16-06.
