Get ready for another L.A. sports classic: Loyola vs. Mira Costa in volleyball
Get ready for one of the best yearly high school sporting events in Los Angeles.
It’s Loyola taking on Manhattan Beach Mira Costa in boys’ volleyball on Friday at 7 p.m. at Loyola Marymount.
If you’ve never attended this yearly match, you’re missing out on a competition that says everything about Southern California.
It’s two programs loaded with future college players, with student bodies that love to cheer and shout and alumni that love to boast about which team comes out on top.
“It’s a pride thing,” said Loyola senior Matt Reilly, who happens to live in Manhattan Beach.
Yes, that’s one of the interesting facts. There are several Loyola players who live in Manhattan Beach and are friends or former teammates with Mira Costa players. It raises the intensity level to the highest degree, because bragging rights are always at stake.
“I think it’s a lot different because you know the other person on the other side of the net,” Reilly said.
Loyola is ranked No. 2 in Southern Section Division 1 and lost to No. 1 Huntington Beach in the Best of the West tournament. Mira Costa is ranked No. 3. The match also helps with playoff seeding besides being about neighborhood pride.
