Football: St. John Bosco secondary is loaded with talent

During St. John Bosco’s unbeaten season in 2013, there were few teams that could match the Braves’ secondary made up of future Division I recruits Jaleel Wadood, Chandler Hawkins, Naijiel Hale and Brett Baldwin.

But the 2015 Braves are showing early signs of having similar talent in the secondary based on Saturday’s passing tournament at San Juan Hills.

“Our secondary could be as good as we had back in 2013,� Coach Jason Negro said. “We’re a faster group and have seven or eight guys who can play.�

The Braves’ cornerbacks, Traveon Beck and Mykal Tolliver, don’t shy away from taking on receivers. And the safeties, DJ Morgan and Bryce Turner, are equally aggressive. Beck just picked up an offer from California.

St. John Bosco still has a quarterback competition going, but senior Quentin Davis was looking comfortable firing away.

Edison is going to complete lots of passes this spring and summer with quarterback Grant Lowary and receivers Garrett White and David Atencio.

Mater Dei ended up winning the tournament championship, beating St. John Bosco in the final. It was a good sign for the Monarchs, who have another strong defense, led by Stanford-bound linebacker Curtis Robinson.

Matthew McDonald handled the quarterbacking duties. He’s the son of former USC quarterback Paul McDonald. He’s expected to receive competition in the summer and fall from arriving freshman quarterback JT Daniels.
