Football: Sections divided on state bowl proposal

A rare close vote is expected on Friday at the CIF state Federated Council meeting regarding a proposal that would send all 51 section football champions around the state to bowl games if approved. Currently, 18 get invited.

Executive Director Roger Blake, who supports the proposal, might need to offer some chocolate chip cookies from the host DoubleTree hotel, where the vote will be taken in San Jose, to reach the needed 69 figure if all 136 representatives show up.

The Southern Section, which gets 34 votes, will vote no on the proposal. Also voting no are the North Coast (14 votes) and the Central Coast (13). Voting yes are Los Angeles City (14), San Diego (12) and Sac-Joaquin (17). Other sections are Central (11), Northern (5), Oakland (2) and San Franciso (2) and there are 12 additional votes from such representatives as superintendents, school boards and a coaches association.

There’s also an amendment that would allow teams that lose in an Open Division section title game to be eligible to participate in a bowl game.

Let the lobbying begin.
