Football: Leo Lambert III is going through concussion protocols

Two days ago, in the fourth quarter of Notre Dame’s game against Oaks Christian, Lambert had to leave the game after a helmet-to-helmet hit. Oaks Christian received a 15-yard penalty. Medical personnel decided as a precaution to keep him out of the game over concerns he might have suffered a concussion. It was the second time in the game he had been hit in the head (his helmet came off on the earlier hit).
Thanks to increased scrutiny on concussions, Lambert is in good hands. He did a test before the season that measured how his brain was functioning without injury, so Notre Dame has a baseline test result that will help with management and recovery if it is determined he suffered a concussion.
He was asked questions and examined on Friday night, asked more questions and tested Saturday and has a doctor’s appointment scheduled for Monday.
It’s quite a change from years ago, when players came to the sideline after a hard hit and usually got put right back in if they said they were OK. Now there are clear concussion protocols that must be followed.
Lambert will need doctor’s clearance to play on Friday against Birmingham. Otherwise, he will be sidelined at least seven days.
