Football: Four sites under consideration for City Section championship games

The City Section held its annual mandatory meeting for football coaches on Saturday at Garfield High, and Commissioner John Aguirre said there are four sites under consideration to host the three division championship games in December.
The sites are Cerritos College, Valley College, Pasadena City College and Southwest College. The Division I, II and III finals will be played on a Saturday. There’s also a possibility of using the Coliseum, but Aguirre said he needs to talk to USC, which now runs the facility.
Also at the meeting Aguirre announced a major change for incoming freshmen players. They will be put on a 10-week probationary period academically and be eligible immediately no matter their grades as eighth-graders. It is similar to what other sections have and gives freshmen the chance to improve while playing on a sports team. The change was made by the Los Angeles Unified School District. There was a feeling with no summer school, students had no opportunity to gain eligibility.
“We’ve been fighting for this forever,” Garfield Coach Lorenzo Hernandez said.
Aguirre also plans to propose a three-week summer dead period similar to what other sections have for their sports teams.
