Football: Dorsey principal offers statement on firing of Paul Knox
Reginald Sample, the principal of Dorsey High who told Paul Knox on Tuesday that he would no longer be the football coach, issued a statement on Wednesday through the Los Angeles Unified School District’s communications office saying he wanted Knox to stay involved with the school and the program.
“I want to provide clarity about the meeting that Coach Knox and I had so that those who were not privy to the conversation will not make unfounded conclusions without knowing the actual facts and opportunity that was presented,” the statement says.
“As the Dorsey High School principal, it has been an honor to have Coach Paul Knox. Due to his leadership on and off the field, he has prepared many of our youth for their future. As a teacher and coach, Mr. Knox was able to be an influence to all of our students in the classroom and the football field. I would like to see this continue. Therefore, I have asked Coach Knox to serve in a different capacity and help us recruit students in our community to attend Dorsey through our Magnet Program as well as continue his positive influence to our young men while I search for a full time teacher and head football coach.”
“I see this as closing one chapter in his successful career and opening a new chapter on a more macro level to make an even greater impact on the football program in the area of coaching and player development and community relations. This is a great way to honor a man who has done so much for this school and community.”
Knox, the football coach since 1985, said Tuesday night he was disappointed in Sample’s decision and wanted to continue coaching.
